About Narasapur Crochet Lace Craft

The Narasapur crochet lace craft is a traditional art form deeply rooted in the Godavari region of Andhra Pradesh, India. Recently, in 2024, it garnered attention by receiving the prestigious Geographical Indications (GI) tag, a testament to its unique identity tied to the local geography. Originating in the 19th century, the craft traces back to 1844 when Macrae and his wife from Scotland introduced it to local women associated with a Christian missionary in Dummugudem, presently in Telangana.

Despite facing historical challenges like the Indian famine in 1899 and the Great Depression in 1929, the craft persisted and flourished by the early 1900s, with over 2,000 women involved in the Godavari region. Today, Narsapur, Palacole, Razole, and Amalapuram serve as major trade points for lace products produced by nearly 15,000 women.

The craft’s revival holds significance as it has faced a decline in production due to the COVID-19 pandemic and competition from China’s machine-made lace products. The GI tag, granted by the Department of Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), provides legal protection and acknowledgment, limiting the geographical scope to 19 mandals in West Godavari and Dr. B.R.Ambedkar Konaseema districts.

Managed by various cooperatives and associations, including the Alankriti Federation and Narasapur All India Crochet Lace Exporters Association, the Narasapur crochet lace craft has become a symbol of cultural and historical heritage, with hopes that the GI tag will propel it to global recognition and increased demand in the market.
